Amazon India Would Soon Deliver its Orders in Electric Vehicles

E-commerce giant, Amazon India intends to add 10,000 Electric Vehicle (EV)s into its fleet of delivery vehicles by 2025. The company piloted EVs in several cities across India, and its success has spurred Amazon to expand this service all over India. The fleet of 10,000 EVs would be designed and manufactured by Indian OEMs. This initiative is a part of Amazon's commitment to climate pledge. These EVs are in addition to the global commitment of 100,000 EVs in the delivery fleet by 2030. With this measure, Amazon India intends to bring down carbon emissions and the environmental impact of delivery operations with the introduction of EVs.

The fleet of 10,000 delivery vehicles would include 3-wheeler and 4-wheeler vehicles designed and manufactured in India. This year these vehicles are expected to operate in more than 20 cities in India that includes Bangalore, Delhi NCR, Coimbatore, Pune, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Nagpur, and more.

The company has been working with various Indian OEMs to design a fleet of vehicles that ensures sustainable and safe deliveries of customer orders. The progress in the Indian e-mobility industry in the past few years has paved the way for advanced technology, superior motor and battery components. Moreover, the government's support in adopting electric vehicles by setting up charging infrastructure with the FAME 2 policy has favoured the company to accelerate and chart its vision for EVs in India.

In September 2019, signing the Climate Pledge, Amazon committed to turn net zero carbon by 2040 in all its businesses. Thus, the company claims that the EVs delivery fleet would save about four million metric tons of carbon per year by 2030. Also, Amazon India has also invested in energy conservation, solar power generation and water conservation methods in its Fulfillment Centers and Sort Center, to make the operations more sustainable.

“At Amazon India, we are committed to building a supply chain that will minimize the environmental impact of our operations. The expansion of our Electric Vehicle fleet to 10,000 vehicles by 2025 is an integral milestone in our journey to become an energy-efficient leader in the industry. We will continue to invest in the electrification of our delivery fleet, thereby reducing our dependence on non-renewable resources,” says Akhil Saxena, Vice President, Customer Fulfillment – APAC & Emerging Markets, Amazon.
