New Delhi, The UGC has asked Delhi University to admit students for the 2014-15 session in three-year undergraduate programme, HRD Minister Smriti Irani said Monday.

"The UGC has written to all colleges under the University of Delhi to comply with its directives and ensure that students are admitted only under the three-year undergraduate programme," the human resource development minister said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

Irani said the University Grants Commission (UGC) had constituted an advisory committee comprising of five eminent academics and it observed that the four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP) was a deviation from the National Policy on Education's (NPE) pattern.

Admissions to DU were delayed due to a row between the varsity and the UGC over FYUP's continuation.

In the end, the university decided to roll back the four-year undergraduate programme.

"It also observed that the ordinances affecting the departure from the established national pattern did not have the approval of the competent authority. In view of the same, the commission decided to issue an advisory to Delhi University to review the continuation of FYUP," the reply stated.
