The management of the Besant Institutions was taken over by the Women’s National Education Society from the Theosophical Society in 1943. As heirs to the legacy of its revered founder, the Society felt the need for an institution to promote higher education among women. The late Manel Srinivas Nayak, a great philanthropist and visionary was at the helm of affairs of the Society when Besant Women’s College was established in 1977. His foresight and initiative, as well as the active leadership of his successors had played a vital role in the impressive growth of the College in a short span of time. Within the first decade itself the student strength shot up to one thousand and today it is one of the leading women’s Colleges in the city.

The College follows a policy of non-discrimination regarding economic or social status and caste or creed. We place as much emphasis on moulding students’ character and attitude to life as on improving their academic performance and proficiency in extra¬curricular activities like athletics and fine arts. The subjects offered in the College are judiciously balanced betwen the tradtiona! like History, Economics, Sociology and Political Science and the progressive such as Computer Science, Business Management, Journalism and Food, Nutrition and Dietetics. The College has entered a new era of growth, offering a post graduate course in Commerce.
The Besant Institutions are bound to scale new heights of achievements in the years to come, for they cherish the noble ideal that students should be helped to develop a liberal and progressive outlook, adding a new dimension to their natural, national heritage of cultural and moral values.
