India is counted among the first 15 countries that largely generate Internet attack traffic across the globe, including viruses, bots, worms or malicious codes. India stands at 12th position in a list topped by China and U.S., respectively at 1st and 2nd places.

The quarterly ‘State of the Internet report’, prepared by Akamai Technologies for the 3rd quarter of the year 2008 says that India is contributing 1.6 percent to observed global attack traffic. In the last quarter, the country was ranked at 15th position.

During the third quarter, attack traffics originating from 179 unique countries were observed, up nearly 30 percent from the second quarter count of 139 countries. After China and the U.S., Japan, which stood 1st in attack traffic generation during the second quarter, bettered its level in sending attack traffic to fifth place. South Korea and Sweden stood at 3rd and 4th places, respectively.

Meanwhile, in terms of number of observed IP addresses, India was ranked at 20th position with 2.6 million connections, indicating a 23 percent growth in IP addresses. At the same time only three countries among the top 10 saw double-digit percentage increases quarter-over-quarter; they were China (10.5 percent), South Korea (12.1 percent), and Brazil (27.1 percent).

The U.S had 109 million and China had 38 million unique IPs, and both the countries were ranked at 1st and 2nd places respectively. Japan, Germany and France came at 3rd 4th and 5th places.

Interestingly, the Internet connections from India with speeds above 256 Kbps was found at 74 percent, indicating gradual shift from dial-up speeds to high speed connectivity, while the connections with speeds above 2 Mbps was at five percent, growing 16 percent over second quarter.

“In the third quarter, we saw 23 percent growth in terms of new IPs from India. This increase may be attributable to more people turning to the World Wide Web for news and video content related to the Beijing Olympic Games, which took place in August,” said Sanjay Singh, Managing Director - India, Akamai Technologies.
