India has advanced rapidly up the competitiveness scale in the past year, according to the World Competitiveness Yearbook 2004. This listing is brought out every year by the International Institute of Management Development, a leading Swiss Business School.
India showed its best ranking ever, having risen to the 34th place among a total of 60 nations covered by the survey. Last year it stood 50th, which had been a sharp drop from 41 in 2002.

Topping the list is the United States; it has been doing so continuously for the past four years. The U.S. is followed by Singapore, Canada, Australia and Iceland. Luxembourg, ranked 2nd last year is in 9th place.

The IMD yearbook is considered one of the two most authentic rankings on competitiveness, the other being the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report. The ranking seeks to analyze the ability of nations to create and maintain an environment in which enterprises can compete. It has been published without interruption since 1989. The Yearbook considers 60 countries and judges them on the basis of 323 competitiveness criteria, which are grouped into four ‘competitiveness factors’: economic performance, government efficiency, business efficiency and infrastructure. Each of these in turn are divided into five sub-factors that highlight the facets of the area analyzed. The data for the survey is drawn from 4,166 executives.
