India houses ARM’s largest chip design center

The U.K. based Chip designer ARM hooked the tag of second largest design center outside Cambridge with the extension of its design center in Bangalore. The new center would make it possible to double the number of staff to 700 from the 350 it currently employs.

“ARM is not scouting around to fill the vacancies; on the contrary it would hand pick best of the talent, said Anil Gupta, Managing Director, ARM. To solve the problem of tracking the appropriate talent, ARM is investing significant amount in its academic alliances, and learning and development programs.

The company with 7,000 engineers worldwide doesn’t make chips, but rather sells its designs to other companies for incorporation in their chips. The Bangalore design center is involved in designing ARM’s processors and developing VLSI component libraries. His Royal Highness The Prince Andrew, The Duke of York KG, KCVO, inaugurated the center.

Lenovo plans R&D center in India

The world’s fourth largest computer maker Lenovo is set to make its footprint in India. Followed by the launch of its new PC brand `Idea’ in the country, the company made public its plans to set up a research and development center in India.

As part of a multi-pronged strategy to grow faster and more profitably than the industry average, China’s Lenovo is eyeing overseas investments and large scale acquisitions in the emerging markets of India, Brazil, Mexico, the Middle East and Eastern Europe.

Lenovo India Executive Director (Transaction Business) Anil Philip said, “The company has a significant focus on the consumer segment in India and it will continue to focus on the Indian market.”

Eaton opens professional service center at Pune

As a part of scaling up the diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton’s operations, Alexander M. Cutler, Eaton Chairman and CEO inaugurated its professional services center at Kharadi, Pune. The center will include engineering support, research, product development, financial shared services, and other information technology enabled services.

“The new facility will house an estimated 1,300 employees by 2010,” said Shyam Kambeyanda, Managing Director, Eaton India.

Since its inception in 2003, the engineering center at the Pune campus has grown to more than 400 employees with an initial focus on the Fluid Power business. The U.S. based $12.4 billion Eaton has 70,000 employees worldwide. The company is a global player in the automotive components business, power control systems, and hydraulics with a presence in more than 150 countries.

TCS and Nokia Siemens join hands for R&D in Germany

Tata Consultancy Service (TCS) and Nokia Siemens Networks have agreed for a multimillion-euro venture to jointly do research and develop telecom products at Nokia Siemens’ Dusseldorf center in Germany.

Nokia Siemens will effect a transfer of product engineering, research and development services, and parts of its operations and business software (OBS) to TCS. As part of the deal, the operations transfer includes 90 employees who will be moved to TCS.

The agreement would leverage the expertise of both the companies in the telecommunications sector.

Yahoo! launches new lab in Bangalore

As a premium step towards moving beyond the current paradigm, the Internet giant Yahoo! India is strengthening its R&D operations with the launch of Yahoo! labs at Bangalore. Dr. Rajeev Rastogi who is appointed as the Vice President and head of the new lab will steer the research to focus on search and information retrieval and large scale computational linguistics.

While the current Yahoo! India R&D is focused on new products and engineering, the focus of the new lab will be on long term research. “At this time we are looking out for more Indian techies with a Ph.D. who would be interested to relocate to India,” says Rastogi.

Yahoo! India has 10 percent of the global work force of Yahoo! and the new lab looks forward to innovate solutions from two to six years from now. Yahoo! has similar labs in New York, Santiago and Barcelona.
