Rending the darkness of the midnight, the much-awaited Apple iPhone hit the Indian market exactly at 12 a.m. on August 22. However the much-hyped launch in India failed to draw as much crowd as it did in the U.S. and Europe. The device launched across India by telecom majors Bharti Airtel and Vodafone is priced at Rs.31,000 for 8GB and Rs.36,100 for 16GB of memory space.

While more than 200,000 customers pre-registered with Airtel for the iPhone, a Vodafone executive said the company received booking from 2,000 customers. Besides the four metropolitan cities, the phones were also sold at Hyderabad and Bangalore and will be introduced in 65 more cities across India soon.

According to a recent survey, more than 150,000 iPhones (2G) are already being used in the country, which have either been imported by enthusiasts or bought in the grey market. India, till now, has been the third largest unofficial market for iPhone after Russia and China.
