Devkumar Gandhi
Monday, March 3, 2008
In the next few years, wireless broadband will reach most of India, China and the developing world and this will change the role of the mobile phone the way it’s used for personal and business communications. I see the mobile industry finally helping the developing world bridge the digital divide. The mobile phone has already become an important communication tool, but it will now provide access to information people need without having a PC and Internet access. For the urban youth, the mobile phone will become an important entertainment tool to pass time, where they can play a game or watch a video and read news highlights. Mobile WiMax and LTE (next generation wireless service) is the most important development over the next year, especially in the developing world. The broadband wireless and affordable data services will open up the mobile phone to whole new innovative applications and services that will improve people’s life and business productivity.

Innovative services and communities will be built using applications on the phone in urban and rural areas, using both voice and data services over the mobile phone. Entrepreneurs will see opportunities in mobile entertainment, business and financial services. There are lots of opportunities for innovation in mobile device hardware, and specially software for User Interface, Applications and Advertising.
