Thumping Indian Victory-UK Elections
SI Team
Monday, June 1, 2015
The Indian community in UK has all the reason to be jubilant with a record number of ten Indians elected as MPs in the recently concluded general elections, breaking the previous record of eight. It's a great feat given to the community's vote accounting for only a fraction of the total electorate-6,15,000 out of over 45 million. The stalwarts include Keith Vaz, Priti Patel and Infosys Co-founder, Narayana Murthy's son-in-law, Rishi Sunak.

In the wake of an economical resurgence in India, British Prime Minister David Cameron's initiative to deepen bilateral ties with India has been strengthened with Indian Diaspora champion, Priti Patel, retaining her Witham seat with a 41.5 per cent majority, winning 27,123 seats.

Rishi Sunak contested from the Tory safe seat of Richmond (Yorks) in the north of England. As a first-time MP in the House of Commons, he notched an impressive 51.4 percent majority, trouncing his nearest opponent, Matthew Cooke of the UK Independence Party (UKIP), who could muster only a mere 8,194 votes. He equates the victory to his upbringing where he grew up watching his parents serve the local community with utmost dedication.

In support of the Labor Party, the predominantly large Indian voter community of Leicester East and Ealing Southall has ensured that prominent Labor candidates like long-serving MPs Keith Vaz and Virendra Sharma has retained their seats from their respective constituencies.

The victory march continues with Conservative Party's Alok Sharma (Reading West), Shailesh Vara (Cambridgeshire North West) and Suella Fernandes for winning from the Fareham constituency. In the Labor party, Valerie Vaz retained her Walsall South seat, while novice Lisa Nandy and Seema Malhotra won from Wigan and south west London, respectively.
