SpikeSource spikes $24 M during Series B

Japanese conglomerate NEC along with Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, Fidelity Investments, Intel Capital, Omidyar Network, CMEA Ventures and Duff Ackerman Goodrich has invested a total of $24 million in SpikeSource, a provider of open source solutions. In May 2005, the company raised $12.9m in its first VC round.
NEC will use SpikeSource, co-founded by Murugan Pal, to bring open source infrastructure and solution software on NEC hardware. The funding will support continued investment in solutions and expansion of channels across the globe.

SpikeSource will deliver open source applications and infrastructure software via a global market of solution providers and by becoming NEC’s strategic global open source solution provider, SpikeSource will extend its application portfolio in Japan and other regions to support NEC customer requirements.

With the fresh infusion of funds, SpikeSource will concentrate more on the Asia and Europe markets. The Redwood City, California-based company is also expecting to add more application categories to its portfolio, as well as more offerings in each category. One target area is communications and collaboration, particularly in the areas of data and voice convergence.
