Notebook Outsmarts Desktop in Sales
Eureka Bharali
Wednesday, December 31, 2008
Despite the doomed economic outlook, notebook shipments have surpassed sales of desktops for the first time in the third quarter, with the sales of the former touching 36.5 million.

Desktop shipments have slipped by about 1.3 percent to 38.5 million while the notebooks saw a 40 percent surge. Moreover, it is also expected that the manufacturers will ratchet down the production of desktops by at least 20 percent in the fourth quarter, while notebook production would remain flat.

However, in terms of the overall PC sales the vista is more shattering as two top research firms, IDC and Gartner, have lowered their forecast for the upcoming sales. While the former expects a fall of 5.3 percent, to $267 billion, in sales next year, the latter anticipates it to be the toughest in the last seven years.

So, it can be a relief for the consumer’s pocket as firms will strive towards boosting their sales through deliberate reductions in prices.
