The official statistics by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) states that as on May 31st, 2012, Indian mobile subscribers have reached 929.37 million, which will soon hit a billion. The report also states that the wireless user base showed a monthly increase of 0.91 percent in May from 921.02 million in April this year.

According to the statistics, Bharti Airtel showed a peak at 185.3 million, Reliance Communications at 154 million, Idea Cellular at 115.97 million and Vodafone closing at 152.5 million. Uninor, Aircel and Tata Teleservices have also managed to grab more subscribers to their existing list. The overall rise in the telecom sector in India currently is 79.28 percent, including the number of mobile and landline users.

On the other hand, both BSNL and MTNL have lost the number of subscribers and the users have reduced drastically showing a statistics of 97.7 million and 5.6 million users respectively. The controversy of 2G Spectrum scam has not hampered the growth of private service providers, as they have retained or rather improved on their market position. The total number of broadband subscribers also maintained their position in the increasing pattern with 14.31 million users at the end of May 2012, compared to 13.95 million users the previous month, showing a monthly growth of 2.6 percent.

The lack of popularity in BSNL when compared to private service providers is because of the facilities that are provided by Airtel, Vodafone and other service providers. One of the main reasons due to which BSNL is less preferred is because of the lack of network coverage. Students are the key users of mobiles today and they look out for exciting SMS offers than the call prices. Apart from students, the general public is interested in Aircel, Vodafone, and Uninor services as it provides calls and messages at lesser prices when compared to BSNL.
