Dr. Shaik Jeelani, VP, research and Sponsored Programs at Tuskegee University in Alabama received the presidential award 2011 for mentoring. President Obama on Nov 15 named nine individuals and eight recipients of the presidential award for excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering mentoring. The mentors will receive their respective awards at a White House ceremony later this year.

The award recognizes the important roles that mentoring plays in the academic and personal development of students studying science and engineering specifically those who belong to groups that are underrepresented in these fields that are mentioned. The expertise and encouragement that these mentors offer help in preparing the next generation of scientists and engineers to ensure that tomorrow's innovators benefit from the talent of the United States.

Obama said that the organizations and individuals play a crucial role in the development of our 21st Century workforce. He also added that the Nation owed them a debt of gratitude for helping which ensures that America remains a world leader in science and engineering for years to come.

These candidates were nominated by colleagues, administrators and students in their institutions. The recipients receive awards of $25,000 from the National Science Foundation to advance their mentoring efforts. The mentors and organizations announced represent the winners for 2010 and 2011.
