Blu-ray wins in DVD war

Toshiba and Sony have been in a neck and neck race to have their respective DVD formats like HD DVD and Blu-ray disc accepted by mainstream tech firms and entertainment studios. However, recently Sony’s Blu-ray disc seems to have got the edge in this race. In response to a huge customer demand, Warner Bros Home Entertainment Group has announced that it will release its high-definition DVD titles exclusively in the Blu-ray disc format beginning later this year.

The NPD group, a provider of consumer and retail market research, notes in its study that Blu-ray players held 60 percent of the HD media player market before Warner Bros’ Announcement. In a week after the announcement Blu-ray players grabbed 93 percent of the market.

As a rebuff to Warner Bros, Toshiba announced that it is slashing prices of its HD DVD format players by 40 to 50 percent. However, analysts like Forrester Research predict that the Blu-ray format would come out at the top in the format war because of growing support for the technology.
