Arun Kumar Singh, an Indian diplomat and ambassador to France, is appointed as the new Ambassador of India to U.S. Singh joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1979 after completing his Masters degree in Economics from Delhi University and teaching in the same university for two years. At 59, Singh succeeded S Jaishankar-who is now the Foreign Secretary of India-soon after he received the new title and presented a copy of the credentials to the State Department of U.S. in April.

During his illustrious career, he filled many pivotal roles like being the Ambassador to Israel and as the Joint Secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. Singh has also served as the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in U.S. located at Washington D.C. For the U.N. Permanent Mission in New York, Singh served as Counselor between 1993 and 1997. His work, during this time, involved handling multilateral social and economic negotiations between India and U.S. Following this period, Singh became a part of the Indian Mission at Moscow and filled the role of a Counselor and also as a Minister till 2000.

While engaged in the new role, Singh aims to utilize his skills to strengthen the strategic partnership shared between India and U.S. Sources suggest his place as deputy chief of mission in French embassy will be replaced by G Mohan Kumar, the current Indian ambassador to Bahrain. Singh is also known for his proficiency in many foreign languages like Russian and Japanese.
