Apple unveils world’s thinnest laptop

Steve Jobs seems to spell the ‘iPhone magic’ on the notebook market too. Following its success of selling four million iPhones in the first 200 days, Apple has alarmed the world by unveiling the ‘world’s thinnest laptop’ called MacBook Air at the annual Macworld event.

The MacBook Air laptop, which weighs less than 1.5 kgs is less than two centimeters thick, features a backlit 13 inch (33 cm) screen, a full-size keyboard and a pad responsive to Apple’s multi-touch control gestures. For software installation, Apple is introducing technology to allow the MacBook Air to borrow optical drives from nearby PCs or Macs over a network. Users can install special software on the remote machine, and Air would address the remote machine’s optical drive as though it is Air’s own. The Windows version of the software will allow PCs to run Mac installation programs on Air’s behalf.

Priced at $1,800, the laptop is powered by Intel’s 1.6 GHZ Core 2 Duo processor as standard, with an available 1.8 GHZ upgrade. It has 2 GB of RAM, battery life of five hours, and an 80 GB hard drive. It has no built-in CD drive, but does offer an external drive for an additional $99. Some of the reviewers find that MacBook Air has a downside. As its screen height is comparatively higher, it isn’t as usable as some competitors, when the seat in front of you in a coach or a plane is reclined.
