Apple Unveils 3G iPhone

Tuesday, July 1, 2008
Apple takes a new turn with its CEO Steve Jobs unveiling the new 3G iPhone at Apple worldwide web developer’s conference in San Francisco. The roll out of iPhone in 20 countries on July 11 brings out the severity of the rat race to capture the market. Bernstein Research estimates that the 3G iPhone will sell roughly 15 million to 20 million units in fiscal 2009.

In the U.S., the base model 3G iPhone with 8GB of memory will be sold for $199 and the 16GB model for $299. Unlike the previous edition, the new iPhone will officially let third party applications run on it. In India, the iPhone is expected to touch the market by the end of the year through Bharthi Airtel. Though, while announcing Jobs said that the iPhone would be available in 70 countries at the same cost, the details related to pricing by Bharthi Airtel are yet to be disclosed.

The iPhone 3G combines all the features of Apple’s first generation iPhone, while enabling faster Internet speeds and built-in GPS for expanded location based mobile services. The latest report from Analysys Mason, the premier advisers on telecoms, IT, and digital media says that Apple has a window of opportunity to have a significant impact on the mobile TV market.
Moreover, experts find that the Apple iPhone has the potential of becoming a stronger competitor in the business market against Research in Motion's popular BlackBerry, and could weaken the impact of Google's initiative to build an open source operating system for smartphones.
