Redpine Signals: Poised to Conquer the IoT Space

Since IoT market space exhibits an \"inch deep, mile wide phenomenon,\" which refers to too many market segments each segment constitutes a small volume of the total IoT market; vendors often find it difficult to build a sustainable business. However, the vendors normally face challenges in fine-tuning a large number of technology components (multiple wireless protocols, power management, memory, processing, sensor interfaces) on a small silicon die. Addressing these challenges, Redpine Signals created wireless convergence solutions for IoT device makers\' with an idea of putting all wireless protocols on one silicon die. Redpine Signals created the world\'s first wireless combo chip for IoT space with RS9113 M2MCombo chipset. \"The RS9113 chipset has support for dual band 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Classic, Bluetooth low energy, and ZigBee with ultra-low power profile,\" says Venkat Mattela, Chairman and CEO. \"Our M2MCombo chipset expertise and relentless focus on convergence research has helped Redpine stay ahead in the wireless space,\" says Mattela.
The company\'s initial focus was to provide combo connectivity for mobile phones. Today, they\'ve developed the largest number of modules for IoT includes the dual band Wi-Fi + Dual mode BT 4.1 and ZigBee. Having achieved this milestone, the company moved into providing total solution by introducing advanced IoT Device Maker WyzBee platform.
The system side of IoT space was addressed with WyzBee device maker platform. \"The WyzBee THING cards and advanced cloud platform helps to create IoT applications rapidly,\" says Mattela. Redpine\'s ability to provide advanced chipset, certified modules, IoT platform, and cloud, all at one place comes across as a significant milestone.
Redpine Signals is not just a chip company any more. The company has three business units\' chipsets, modules and devices, and services unit. \"Along with Real-time Locationing Systems (RTLS), we have the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) products as part of our devices and services group,\" says Mattela. RTLS or indoor locationing technology with Wi-Fi is the pioneering technology for Redpine Signals. \"The main value with our solution versus what you have in the market today is that, our solution is based on overlay architecture, so we do not have to disrupt the existing network when you bring Redpine RTLS solution on-board,\" affirms Mattela. \"We were the first to use 802.11a (5GHz) technology for Wi-Fi RTLS in the industry,\" says Mattela. \"In reality, when you are running an application over a standard protocol, your power consumed depends on the application and protocol it run on versus the underlying circuit power,\" says Mattela.
\"Another significant R&D intiative we took many years ago that has resulted in a main stream product for us today is the Wavecombo\'s 802.11p module product with unique feature set and 23dBm output power\", says Mattela. This technology is expected to become main-steam in automative market in few years. Redpine is working with Tier-1 automotive companies today.
All the modules for IoT developed by Redpine are industrial grade which has helped them to create a dual-band Wi-Fi module for medical applications and government agencies. \"Here, we have a FIPS 140-2 certification for one of our modules which is in production and is being uses by a medical customer today,\" says Mattela. In IoT space, market is nowhere close to maturity and Redpine Signals has a few thousand vendors in all areas like chipsets, modules, systems, cloud vendors. \"By 2020 time frame, we are all poised to be amongst the small, but exclusive number of premier IoT solution providers across the globe,\" says Mattela.
