Moving Out to Drive Innovation

Date:   Monday , December 01, 2008

Sudip Nandy, a former senior executive with Wipro, has recently joined Aricent technologies as its CEO. With over 25 years of experience at Wipro, Nandy lastly headed the company’s technology, media, and telecom business that had annual revenues of $1.3 billion and oversaw more than 18,000 employees. Nandy, who joined Wipro in the ’90s, moved to the Silicon Valley and headed the company’s R&D services and technology business, after a brief stint in India, and subsequently became vice president of a product development and marketing startup acquired by Wipro. Later, he also headed the telecom and product engineering solutions business and was chief strategy officer responsible for Wipro Technologies’ global expansion, including mergers and acquisitions (M&As). He successfully managed nine M&As and two joint ventures, before returning to India in mid 2004.

In his new position at Aricent, Nandy will be responsible for driving the innovation and taking the company to the next level of growth. He is currently occupied with putting together a strong leadership team. Talking about his shift from Wipro he said, “Wipro had become quite generic. I wanted to move out to a purely technology focused company. At Aricent, 80 percent of the business is product designing and support and I saw a great opportunity here to drive technology innovation.”

Nandy strongly believes in teamwork and says that leaders need to empower and enable every individual so that they can contribute as much to the team as possible. He sees that a lot of young techies tend to aspire for managerial roles too soon, and advises them to learn and develop their core competencies first and then choose the career path accordingly.

Outside work, Nandy is a fairly easygoing person and loves to fidget with the latest gadgets and technology. He is also an avid book reader and follows sports passionately. A physics graduate from IIT, Kharagpur, Nandy also holds a degree in electrical technology and electronics from IISc, Bangalore, and an MBA from IIM, Ahmedabad.
