Alphion: Leveraging Bandwidth Demand Via FTTx Solutions Date:   Monday , November 01, 2010 The ever-increasing demand for bandwidth access via FTTx access technology lured the networking firm Alphion to strategically develop its access systems, subsystems and integrated photonic device and grab a huge chunk of the market which is expected to reach $22.8 billion in 2013. The company offers a range of optical networking solutions for the rapidly emerging FTTx market, which are meant to be used in central offices, outside plants, customer premises and network management. The solutions mainly cater to service providers and OEMs in the Fiber-to-the-Premises (FTTP), telecommunications, CATV, fiber optic sensing, test & measurement, medical imaging, and defense system markets. “Every product of our’s has been widely recognized and in a recent deal, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), the largest government telecommunication service provider in India, has selected Alphion GPON technology for the deployment of multiple play FTTx services in the western and southern zones of India. The initial BSNL contract for the Alphion GPON equipment, the first phase of the multiyear program, will provide services to 259,000 Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH) subscribers,” says Dr. Bharat P. Alphion has created a complete GPON technology platform that not only leverages the most sophisticated industry standards, but also is designed for integration into standards-based OEM platforms and service provider networks. It is recognized for developing all-optical PON extension solutions, which allows carriers to extend the reach of existing PON networks from 20km to 60km while also increasing the subscriber base by four times. Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) is becoming the dominant technology for service providers deploying across the Americas, Europe, and Asia, with revenues projected to exceed $2 billion by 2010. Broadband access networks using PON technology are seen as key drivers for economic growth. GPON based networks increase service providers’ ARPU by bundling video, voice and high speed Internet services.
