Coverity: Leading the Race in State of the Art Software Testing Services

Date:   Sunday , December 08, 2013

In the current scenario, almost all companies, from one hundred year old fortune 500 manufacturing enterprises to technology startups, develop and use software to innovate and remain competitive in their respective markets. However these companies often struggle to maintain high software quality and security in the face of increasing software complexities and intense time to market pressures. According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the annual cost incurred by enterprises due to low software quality is $500 billion globally, and 80 percent of software development budgets are dedicated to fixing software defects found late in the cycle. Today, many of the conventional testing methods to find the critical clogs within software are outdated. Most of the budgets are being spent on last minute glitches which result in product delays and increased costs.

Coverity, a development testing company with headquartered in San Francisco and an office in Bangalore, offers solutions for companies that need to protect their brands and bottom lines from software failures. Coverity has come a long way since 2003 to currently provide software testing services to more than 1100 esteemed organizations that span vertical markets including consumer electronics, telecommunications and software companies.

The Inception

Coverity began at the computer science laboratory in Stanford University. The founders of the organization invented a fundamentally different way to test complex source code to find hard to spot, critical software defects in a solution that was consumable for commercial use. Ever since, there has been a rapid adoption of Coverity\'s development testing platform in a wide range of industries including financial services, ISVs, telecom, medical device, gaming, hardware, aerospace and defense, networking, retail and business automation and mobile products to name a few.
With more than 60 million lines of code written by developers every day , the traditional approach to software testing is no longer sufficient to keep at pace as leading organizations are left more vulnerable to business risks associated with poor software quality. \"We responded to this challenge with an innovative approach to software testing: arm organizations with a way to quickly and efficiently test their code and address critical quality and security issues as the code is written,\" says Rajeev Mathur, Country Manager for Coverity India.

Coverity continuously focuses on the means to improve the quality and security of software source code. The company\'s development testing platform automatically tests source code for defects that could lead to product crashes, unexpected behaviors, security breaches or catastrophic failures. Today, the company has in its clientele industry stalwarts such as Microsoft, SAP, Adobe and Symantec to name a few.

At the heart of its development testing platform is Coverity\'s patented analytics engine, which analyzes every line of code written for quality and security issues. \"We help developers quickly understand what code needs to be tested, where there are critical software defects and how to fix them in minutes,\" says Mathur.

In 2006, the company initiated the Coverity Scan service with the United States Department of Homeland Security, to focus on open source software quality and security. Coverity now manages the project, providing its development testing technology as a free service to the open source community. To date, the service, under the testing prowess of Coverity, has scanned more than 300 million lines of code, for more than 700 open source projects.

Staying on the track of providing best of breed testing solutions, Coverity most recently released Coverity Test Advisor, which allows customers to concentrate, focus and prioritize automated testing efforts based on risk and the impact change. The company also spends a great amount of time with customers to understand how it can best help with the adoption of development testing into their software development lifecycles. The commitment to quality has never been lost by Coverty. It has never been more important, as software is used to run mission critical systems such as stock exchanges, automobiles and even medical devices such as pace makers and infusion pumps.

Moving forward, the software testing provider continues on the mission to help organizations deliver the highest quality software in the most efficient manner.
