ManpowerGroup: A Human Touch in the Digital Age

Date:   Tuesday , January 24, 2017

INTRODUCTION

By 2050, India will have more than one billion people eligible to enter the job market according to United Nations estimates. The country will dominate the growth of the working-age population in the Asia Pacific region, second only to China, and India will be increasingly recognized as a leading contributor to the global workforce.
This creates huge opportunities for both employers and individuals, provided people have the right skills. ManpowerGroup\'s 2016 Annual Talent Shortage Survey shows that 40% of employers globally struggle to fill positions, and in India that jumps to 48%. When the skills employers are looking for change so rapidly, the focus is on nurturing learnability - the desire and ability to learn new skills to stay employable for the long term. That\'s why ManpowerGroup partners with more than 400,000 clients around the world to help employers attract, upskill and retain their current and future workforces, while helping more than 3.4 million people each year find work and stay relevant.
  • As advancements in technology continue to create an increasingly global workforce, talent shortages are becoming the new normal for many Indian employers, particularly in the IT and Accounting & Finance sectors,\" said Ram Chandrashekar, ManpowerGroup Executive Vice President of Operational Excellence & IT, President of Asia Pacific Middle East region. \"We continue to see an abundance of individuals coming into the workforce for entry-level opportunities, but it is becoming increasingly challenging for employers to populate their talent pipelines and find candidates at the mid to senior-levels.\"

  • While the Indian economy is on an upswing, there is a mismatch between the skills of the 500+ million workers and the skills employers are looking for, especially in high-demand technical and IT fields. This lack of skilled talent is encouraging employers to rethink how they attract, retain and develop people. ManpowerGroup\'s recent research found that almost a third of employers in India are focusing on creating a learning culture, turning to upskilling and reskilling existing employees to fill open positions. While this is an increase from last year\'s 31%, it is still below the global average of 53%.

    Upskilling and Reskilling in India

In India, ManpowerGroup is finding innovative ways to help upskill and reskill the workforce. Last year, the Experis brand trained 1,000 graduates in testing, Java and Mainframe skills. Working with its client, a top Fortune 500 technology company, Experis designed a tailored curriculum and developed intensive boot camp training in 30-40 day programs. Participants in the Hire, Train, Deploy model have diverse skills and come from across India, at all stages of their careers, and 60% are female. Ninety percent of the participants displayed the learnability needed to complete the program and move on to employment with the client.
Jobs and skills are also a critical component of reviving communities. Manpower India is helping to do just that in the region of Jammu and Kashmir in partnership with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the National Skill Development Corporation. Project Udaan positions the region as a valuable source of highly educated graduate employees offering work experience placements and training in retail, banking and IT. Reaching 40,000 young people over 5 years, the program is delivering sustainable change and offering a bright future to educated young people and providing work-ready talent to companies across India.

Innovations like these helped drive the company\'s solid revenue growth during 2015: revenue in Q3 was $5.1 billion, up from $4.6 billion in Q1 and 4 percent year-on-year in constant currency. It also completed a number of key acquisitions, including Greythorn (Australia & Singapore), Atos (France), Veritaaq (Canada) and 7S Group (Germany).

ManpowerGroup recently helped a global financial services and communications client with little prior operational experience in the country to relocate a significant part of its back and middle-office operations to India. It brought in a team with in-country recruiting experience, shared market knowledge including salary benchmarking across competitors and talent mapping surveys to create effective forecast models. It filled 600 new technology roles, including highly-specialized data science, leadership and analyst roles, delivering 8-10 high-quality profiles for each position and filled 19 niche roles in eight locations. \"The average time to close of 45 days meant we were able to meet all of the client\'s hiring needs six months ahead of the schedule in just 12 months total,\" reminisces Ram Chandrashekar. The elated client signed an exclusive engagement with ManpowerGroup Solutions to source, recruit and onboard other positions within their organization. Now that\'s successful human connections in the digital age.
