The Benares born artist danced as a child with his brother, Uday Shankar. Ravi Shankar received musical instruction from the eminent guru Ustad Allaudin Khan. Khan's influence can be seen in Shankar's inventive styles and ametric spiritual ragas. Working with All-India Radio, Shankar composed many radio scores and film scores, including film legend Satyajit Ray's Pather Panchali, and set texts of the poet-philosopher Rabindranath Tagore to musical scores. In the 1960s Shankar taught Indian music to the Beatles and also performed with the British violinist Yehudi Menuhin. He also wrote two concertos for orchestras.
