There are hardly any people on the planet today who have never tried their hands on any mobile game. But while pressing the mobile button to play a game, how any of us thinks about the economic side of it? That’s the question. It’s a market with increasing revenue.

According to a study by Gartner, globally mobile gaming end-user revenue is estimated to exceed $5.6 billion in 2010, a 19 percent increase from last year’s revenue of $4.7 billion. The market will continue to see a steady growth through 2014, when the market is projected to reach $11.4 billion.

The report has mentioned an interesting fact that 70-80 percent of all mobile consumer applications downloaded are mobile games. “The hype around mobile application stores has opened this market up to numerous publishers and developers - further expanding the revenue potential and competition in this industry”, says Tuong Nguyen, Principal Research Analyst at Gartner.

The increasing accessibility of mobile games in emerging markets also contributes to the global popularity of mobile gaming. Unlike few years back, when users had to invest large amounts to try out a game, only a very small amount of money is needed for a mobile game today. In most cases mobile games are even available free of cost now-a-days.

Improved user interfaces are a top priority for handset vendors as a competitive differentiator. A growing number of devices are implementing touchscreens, gesture, and enhanced QWERTY keyboards to improve the end-user experience. Furthermore, an increasing number of games are taking advantage of existing device features, such as camera, GPS, and accelerometers, to enhance game play.
