Santa Clara based EDA startup, Pyxis Technology, has raised $9.2 million in Series B funding led by Formative Ventures with participation by Series A investors Austin Ventures and CMEA Ventures.

Founded in March 2004 by P.T. Patel, Sharad Mehrotra and Joe Rahmeh, Pyxis is assiduously solving a very challenging problem that chip designers encounter while designing the chip. “To ensure that chip designers have the tools to design chips that will work even at the most advanced technology nodes, we have taken a unique approach. By using Pyxis-software, chip designers will achieve faster turnaround time and allow optimization of their chip designs based on cost, area, manufacturability and yield,” says President and CEO Naeem Zafar. Pyxis’s flexible infrastructure and multi-variable optimization software is designed to efficiently solve the problems arising from physical effects of sub-100nm technologies.

Zafar is confident about the market for Pyxis’ software. “As manufacturing and yield issues become design-dependent, Pyxis’ goal is to capitalize on the need for a true DFM routing solution. Any company that is designing very complex chips will need our software,” says Zafar. He says chip designers in Europe, U.S. and Japan are his prime targets. “As users switch to the next generation technology nodes from 90 nanometer to 65 nanometer and 45 nanometer, we will have a very strong offering,” Zafar says about the $500 million worth market that they are operating in.
Zafar counts large EDA companies like Cadence, Synopsys and Magma among competition, but defends saying that large companies are all struggling to bring products based on ‘5-year-old architecture’ to market and Pyxis has leapfrogged them.

The company has 33 employees spread over two offices in Santa Clara, CA and Austin, Texas.
