When you take a look around you and throughout history, the world has been fortunate to have been inhabited by a whole host of influential leaders. Some of the most admired leaders have been Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Franklin Delano Roosevelt. What made these people such great leaders? Is it a guiding vision, a certain principle that they adopted or the people who supported made them great leaders? “Leadership is like beauty: it’s hard to define, but you know it when you see it.”

A leader is one who sees more than others see, who sees farther than others see, and who sees before others see. In today’s world of business, what defines the strengths and weaknesses of an organization is a powerful leader. He is the most powerful asset any business can dream of. Barrack a famous French painter once said that what matters the most is difficult to describe and leadership is like that. Both art and leadership is so rich in knowledge that both elements excel at seeing trends, extracting their essence, synthesizing their meaning, and communicating them back to people in a way that inspires emotion and action.

A scientist at the University of Michigan some years back listed out 10 dangers for the world. Some of them were very obvious. The first one was nuclear war, second one was a global epidemic of some sort, but the third one was destruction of society by quality of management and leadership. Emphasizing more on this, Prashant Ranade, CEO & President of Syntel, says that there are different areas that a leader needs to focus on to improve the quality of management and to have a successful company. Every leader needs to have a clear vision of what he is aiming for and what will it bear him in future. Also he needs to think in parallel to his followers who will support him to achieve his goals. Emotional intelligence is very important for a leader. A judgment or decision that a leader makes will depend on his Emotional quotient and will play a very vital role when it comes to building a team.

Ambareesh Murty, Country Manager, eBay India, beautifully describes the importance of leaders and leadership in an organization, “Leadership comprises of fairly simple stuff. You need have a great vision, a vision for yourself, keep things simple, and the most important thing is get the right people on the bus. It is ok to make mistakes as a leader but it is not ok to repeat the same mistakes redundantly. Every leader should see failure as an event and not as a person. As long as we can differentiate it then we can be great leaders.”
