Touch screen desktops hi-tech or a fuss?

Touchscreen desktops sound high-tech. The technology giants like Microsoft, Dell, HP and Apple are baking touch features in the operating system or in the desktop application level. The touch-screen market, the computing biggies are vying for, however, may fall flat, as tapping the desktop screen with the fingers, may not turn friendly for users.

The user-friendliness of desktop applications diminishes as recognizing the finger touch is yet to be aptly programmed. It’s harder to be precise with a finger on the touchscreens compared to the mouse and beyond the mouse actions, the special touchscreen features remain constrained to rotate, scroll, zoom in and zoom out. The OS makers like Microsoft may turn out more threatened as hardware with touch capability in desktop market is running scarce. There are a few companies like Asus, LG, Dell, MSI and HP who have experimented on the touch featured desktops, however, till the market acceptance is positive, their further venture in the market with more touch desktops will not be seen. Sony too have backtracked from its earlier announcement of its touchscreened Vaio PCs, which was declared to be introduced during the launch of Windows 7.

The personal ease that a mouse or a keyboard offer, have to be abandoned with the use of touch screens in desktops, a phenomenon which even the ‘querty keyboard mobile freaks’ crave for. The move from niche applications like smartphones to mainstream computing could be another setback as even the browsers like Mozilla do not recognize the touch features. And there would hardly be a user who would love to keep their hands stretched, keeping it raised for hours to complete their work on their desktops.
