The mobile advertising network InMobi, formerly known as mKhoj, has secured $8 million in its second round funding, led by the existing investors Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Sherpalo Ventures. InMobi has now raised more than $15 million since its launch in 2007.

InMobi says that it will use the money to expand its presence in the US as well as its foray into Japanese market. InMobi also plans to grow existing operations in Europe, Asia Pacific, and Africa, and prepares to double its engineering staff.

InMobi being the largest mobile ad network in Asia and with a strong foothold in Africa considers that the geographies are where the user base is exploding. The company sees the demand for its services coming mainly from advertisers, publishers, and developers.

Commenting on the competition, InMobi lists Google’s Admob and Apple as their biggest competitors. The company currently has 130 employees across the world with offices in San Francisco, London, Singapore, Bangalore, Tokyo, and Johannesburg.

The Bangalore based company claims to be the world’s largest independent mobile ad network with 16.9 billion monthly impressions reaching 179 million consumers in 108 countries. Its advertising partners include Reebok, Microsoft, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Yamaha, and Yahoo.
