The Institute of Rural Management was established in 1979 at Anand, Gujarat by Dr. Verghese Kurien. IRMA provides Post-Graduate Diploma in Rural Management, Fellow Program in Rural Management and Certificate in Rural Management. With a strong faculty and unique curricula this institute successfully created the discipline of rural management. The institute's holistic approach is being emulated by other institutions both within the country and abroad.

In seeking to create the spirit of entrepreneurship the IRMA Social Entrepreneurship Cell (iSEC) was created. It aims at promoting sustainable, ecologically-friendly and the equitable socio-economic development of rural people through professional management. The mission of iSEC is to provide a framework to nurture new ideas and provide adequate support for their holistic development at the institutional level. To provide exposure to the students, eminent social entrepreneurs are invited for interactive sessions, various activities are organized to a give a hands-on experience to the budding social entrepreneurs. Students are also given Fieldwork to expose them to working at the grassroots level.

This institute is highly aware of the importance of understanding the importance of the rural context and works towards creating a generation of entrepreneurs and scholars aimed at working at the grass-root level.
