Indians have always made their mark in academia globally and the recent one to do so is Anant Agarwal who has been appointed the director of MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), the institute's largest interdisciplinary lab with 900 members and more than 100 principal investigators coming from eight departments. An alumnus of IIT Chennai and Stanford University, Agarwal is curently a professor in the department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He will be replacing Victor Zue who served as the director of CSAIL for a period of four years. Agarwal during his tenure in MIT has led the development of Raw - an early tiled multicore processor, Sparcle - an early multithreaded microprocessor, and Alewife - a scalable multiprocessor. He also led the VirtualWires project at MIT and was the founder of Virtual Machine Works, which took the VirtualWires technology to market. He is a winner of the Maurice Wilkes prize for computer architecture, and has won several prizes for teaching. He also holds a Guinness World Record for developing the largest microphone array based on Raw, and is the author of the textbook "Foundations of Analog and Digital Electronic Circuits."

The Carbon Research group that Agarwal currently leads at CSAIL is devoted to research and developing operating systems and architecture for multicore and cloud computing. He is currently dealing with the project Angstrom, a multidisciplinary research endeavor uniting scientists from top universities and industry collaborators in an effort to develop a new multicore system. Apart from the above mentioned achievements, he is also the Founder and CTO of Tilera, the company developing the Tile multicore processor.
