The government of India is looking to foster e-governance in the country and will spend Rs. 10,600 crore for various projects in the area. More than half of this amount, Rs. 5,742 crore to be precise, will be used for setting up 100,000 common service centers (CSC) across India by March 2010.

The CSC is a government-run one-stop shop that offers Web-enabled e-governance services in rural areas, including various application forms, certificates, and utility payments such as electricity, telephone, and water bills.

The Communications and IT Minister A. Raja says that almost all CSCs will be set up in the public-private partnership mode and about 10,000 centers will be set up before March this year. Raja also added that Rs. 17.87 billion will be used for the state wide area network (SWAN) project.
