Lightup Data: Turnkey Solution for Monitoring Product Data

In this digital age, consumers produce a massive amount of data every day. By tapping valuable insights from these huge data sets, businesses can gain unmatched operational efficiency and find new revenue streams. Unfortunately, most of the time, this data remains unused or underused. Organizations often look at this data when their consumers report dissatisfaction or errors within the services. That is already too late. This failure to extract information in time leads businesses into a bout of turmoil. To gain the most out of their data-driven operations, it is essential for organizations to proactively detect changes in product data indicative of business issues so they can take corrective action before the customer complains.

Set against this background, Lightup Data enables businesses to run their data-driven operations with more efficiency. The company was founded by Manu Bansal, Vivek Joshi, and Rajiv Ramanathan who hold years of experience in big data, stream processing and statistical signal processing. While working for their previous companies, the trio faced similar issues with managing their data.
“There are tools for testing software, but nothing for testing data. Far too many changes in data go unnoticed, which lead to expensive business problems that could be avoided with the right kind of visibility” says Rajiv Ramanathan, co-founder and VP of Engineering, Lightup Data. Being frustrated, they decided to develop a solution that automatically offers visibility into data drift. This led to the foundation of Lightup Data. “We bring in three different skillsets—the experience of processing large amounts of data, extracting meaning out of data, and marrying that with good user design,” elucidates Vivek Joshi, co-founder and VP of Product, Lightup Data.

Today, the company is known for its system that detects any fluctuation in data, which can be indicative of either a problem with data quality or the product health itself. This enables clients to resolve any issue before it negatively impacts the business. “Our product has been designed to be turnkey. This means that any business, irrespective of the verticals it serves, can use Lightup with almost zero integration effort and see value within a week,” Bansal continues. “Our company’s name clearly defines our intention—light up all the data and extract value from it, going way beyond what is manually possible. We are currently funded by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) and Spectrum28.”

Several businesses today use Lightup by configuring the solution according to their business needs. For instance, online gaming companies face constant fluctuations in users’ engagement with their gaming platform. These fluctuations happen for multiple reasons, such as users not logging in or not playing a game or not depositing money into their gaming accounts.
These issues happen frequently due to root causes beyond IT infrastructure failure such as third-party vendors’ inability to process payments. Unfortunately, businesses cannot track these problems with traditional infrastructure monitoring solutions that are not built for tracking top-level product metrics. Lightup solved this problem for a gaming entity by monitoring all their online assets and providing instant alerts during any change.

Backed by the prowess of many such instances of client success, Lightup Data is now adding new features into the solution to detect issues with quality of data in addition to content of data. This will allow data-sensitive machine learning models to deliver the right predictions and enable businesses to take necessary actions. As such, organizations will be able to cut off bad data out of the pipeline. For instance, if a ride-sharing app is unable to predict the right time to complete a trip because a predictive model is being fed broken traffic data, Lightup can detect the data quality issue and help establish the right expectation for consumers by raising the error margin. “This is one important step that we envision our company taking in the next few years – automatically taking corrective action in response to changes in data,” says Bansal. In a nutshell, Lightup never let the data drift go unnoticed and thus helps businesses seamlessly run their data-driven operations and maximize their data ROI.
