The iBook sporting a translucent, rubber-coated case and a pullout handle, the garish iBook originally came in the choice of two colors: blueberry or tangerine. Apple's iBook is an innovative iMac to go portable with six-hour battery life and optional wireless Web access that was available for $1,599. The iBook features a 12 inch 800 by 600 TFT display, 300 MHz PowerPC G3 microprocessor, 32MB of memory expandable to 160MB, 3.2GB hard drive, ATI RAGE Mobility graphic controller with 4MB SDRAM video memory and 2X AGP support, 56 kbps modem, 10/100BASE-T Ethernet networking, and CD-ROM drive. The system weighs 6.7 pounds and is 13.5 inches wide, 11.6 inches high and 2.1 inches deep. The iBook also includes two built-in antennas and an internal slot for the company's optional AirPort wireless networking card, to work at distances up to 150 feet at rates up to 11 megabits per second. The AirPort card costs $99, while the base station (which can handle up to ten computers) costs $299. Software includes the Mac OS 8.6 operating system, AppleWorks, Palm Desktop Organize, Internet Explorer, Netscape Communicator, AOL 4.0, EarthLink Total Access, The World Book Encyclopedia, QuickTime 4 and several games. But where it lacks is the design and appearance.
