MWC 2011: Acer unveils Android based smartphone, tablets


Bangalore: The ongoing Mobile World Congress (MWC) at Barcelona witnessed the world's second largest PC maker Acer expand its horizon in the smartphone and tablet segment by launching new Android based products in these segments. The company has announced Iconia Smart running on Gingerbread and two tablets - Iconia Tab A100 and Iconia Tab A500 - running on Android Honeycomb. Acer brands the Iconia Smart to be a hybrid device combining a tablet and smartphone. It features a 4.8 inch touchscreen with pixel resolution of 1024 X 480. The interface used in the phone is Acer's proprietary Acer UI 4.2 Breeze. Powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, the Iconia Smart has 512MB RAM and 512MB ROM. It ships with 8GB storage that can be expanded up to 32GB with a microSD card. The smartphone sports an 8MP autofocus camera with LED flash. It can record HD videos at 30fps. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 3G, DLNA, HDMI and GPS complete its connectivity features. The price and release date of the phone is yet to be announced by Acer. Crowding the Honeycomb line up of tablets are the new entrants from the Acer stable. The Iconia Tab A100 features a 7 inch touchscreen display with a pixel resolution of 1024 X 600. It has two cameras - a rear 5MP autofocus camera and a front facing 2MP camera. The second tablet from Acer, the Iconia Tab A500 has a 10 inch touchscreen display. It has a NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core processor and two cameras. A 5MP camera and a front camera for video conferencing. Connectivity features include HDMI, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 3G. Both the tablets will hit the stores in April but their pricing is kept under wraps till now.
