Bangalore: Based on the technology of smallest circuitry, Micron has unveiled a new range of high-capacity laptop solid-state drives (SSDs). Called the RealSSD C400 flash drive, the new portfolio of SSD will start selling, under the name Crucial m4 SSD, online and through select global channel partners in the first quarter of 2011.
The new line of SSDs feature read speeds of up to 415MB/sec and are available in various ranges from 64GB to 512GB. The form factors of the SSDs range from 1.8-inch to 2.5-inch. The SSDs are built around Micron's 25 nanometer (nm) NAND flash lithography technology.
The preceding batch of the SSDs, C300 were 17 percent slower in read speeds than the latest line. The write performance of the SSDs though vary depending upon the capacity. Like the 512GB drive has a write speed up to 260MB/sec, clocking 20 percent faster than the C300 SSDs.
As the market continues to accelerate in the notebooks area, Micron predicts growth opportunities for SSDs here. However, the price of SSDs are more than the hard disk drives. Nonetheless the prices of SSDs are dropping, creating more market space for them in the storage areas.
