AMD showcases first fusion chips


Bangalore: AMD has announced the roll out of its Fusion Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) chips. The chip brings in one silicon, a microprocessor and GPU. The Fusion APUs support DirectX 11 graphics and offer HD video technology. AMD claims the APUs provide enhanced performance while using minimal energy and cost. They will also enhance the battery life over 10 and more hours. As per AMD officials, the new generation of chips will power various computing devices from OEMs like Acer, Dell, HP, Toshiba and others. The company has announced two series of the Fusion chips - E series (Zacate) and C-series (Ontario). The former series caters to desktops and laptops while the latter is for HD netbooks and other PC form factors. Intel has also announced its new line of processors, codenamed Sandy Bridge,which bring the CPU, the graphics processor and the memory controller, all on the same platform. This brings AMD in competition with Intel.
