Samsung's Foldable Mobile to be Launched in 2017

BENGALURU: Samsung’s flagship smartphones—Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge with curved-edge screen were a grand success in smartphone markets. It is rumored that the company is planning to unveil foldable mobiles in 2017, a report from Android Authority said.

The south-Korean smartphone giant has been working on the making of foldable mobile for three years and just completed the prototype of foldable display. It was said that it will launch the mobile in January 2016 which did not happen. However to date, Samsung is hoping to mass produce this ‘smartlet’ and is expected to release the mobile in 2017. It was also said that this smartphone was developed under the code name ‘project valley’ and is being tested in China.

A representative of the industry quoted, “Samsung electronics is making considerable efforts to mass produce foldable mobiles but it will engage in the process after completing few other major undertakings.” “Developing OLED is taking place as per our plan. We are discussing with our partners about the mass production and release of this product,” said Lee Chang-Hoon, Director of Samsung display.

According to ETNews, the smartphone might be featuring 7 inch display with flexible plastic screen which can be bent and folded and used as a 5 inch mobile when folded. It is also rumored that the device is testing both Snapdragon 620 and 820 processor and RAM will be 3 GB.

Whether it is a rumor or Samsung’s next real project, the company has to overcome considerable technical challenges before starting the mass production of foldable smartphones. It is believed that Samsung will solve all the challenges and start mass production in the second half of 2016.
