Current Company Standings in Indian Smartphone Market


BENGALURU: India is one of the leading smartphone markets in the world. It reached to shipments of 30Mn units in the third quarter of 2016. The Q3 of 2016 experienced a growth of 20 percent since last quarter. It is estimated that by 2017 India will surpass US to become the second largest smartphone market in the world. Gadgets Now listed some of the top smartphone companies in India.

Samsung is leading with about 23 percent of the Indian smartphone market share. With an increase of 8 percent in the third quarter, the company is growing at an average of 9.7 percent every year. Even after recalling its defective flagship- Galaxy Note 7 smartphone, Samsung kept its strong portfolio in the Indian market with multiple new launches. Galaxy J2 was the key handset, which increased sales of Samsung in the country.

The Lenovo group, including Motorola is holding the second position with a market share of 9.6 percent. The shipment of Lenovo measured a rise of 46.1 percent in Q3 in comparison to Q2. The volume of Motorola handsets just doubled quarter-on-quarter. The main contributor to the rise of Motorola is its latest G4 and E3 Power models. Lenovo K5 series is a top contributor to the company with a market share of 40 percent.

In Q2 Micromax was in the second position from where it now slipped to the third position in Q3. The main reason behind its decline is 32 percent fall in shipments of its smartphones in the last quarter. Micromax is facing strong competition from some Chinese and local vendors in the mid-range smartphone segment.

Xiaomi is a new entrant in the top smartphone company list. The shipments of this Chinese smartphones just doubled in the last quarter. Xiaomi is primarily focused on online sales and less product portfolio, still its sale increased to more than 2.5 times in comparison to the previous year. The firm is planning to expand its roots in offline channels also, tightening the competition in the Indian Smartphone market.
