Android Wear Updates Bring Many New Features, Including Wi-fi

BANGALORE: The rumours that updates to Android Wear will include Wi-fi have been confirmed by spokespeople from Google.  The updates will cover all smartwatches that operate on the wearable platform, starting with the new LG Urbane Watch. The update will reach all devices within the next couple of weeks.

Wi-fi support isn’t all that’s new. Apps now have the power to remain in always-on mode and maintain the watch’s display at all times.  Earlier, that functionality was limited to the screen, which could show you the time. From now on, developers can make use of this feature, so that their apps stay visible for as long as needed. An interesting power saving feature included is that the screen of the watch will only be in full color when you are looking at it.

In addition, gesture support has been enabled on Android Wear. This means you can flick your wrist to scroll through messages and notifications. The update also allows you to access apps and start messaging at the click of a button.  A fun feature introduced, is that you can draw emojis on to the watch face to be recognized and have it sent to the recipient.

The wi-fi functionality will probably be the most popular feature with users, though. Your watch only needs to be linked to a Wi-Fi network with Internet access, and your handset needs to have access to an active data connection - and all your notifications will keep showing up on your wrist.
