BB Pearl 8100 was released in September 2006 and it was RIM’s first real effort to attract consumer attention to its wares after dominating the business market.

Alongside its SureType keyboard, it had 2.25-inch, 65K colors, 240 x 260 pixels, 2.2 inches screen. The device also had integrations of RIM's now notable enterprise features it was also the first BlackBerry handset to offer a camera, which was 1.3-megapixel and a media player application.

It also replaced RIM's well-worn thumbpad with a trackball for more precise operation for the first time; a feature that would become a staple of other RIM devices.

With staple consumer features like a camera and media playback functionality, it remains one of the company's bestselling handsets of all time.

The device had 64 MB internal memory and a microSD card slot for further expansion. It ran in BlackBerry OS powered by 32-bit Intel XScale PXA272 312 MHz.
