Xperia Play; world's first PlayStation Smartphone


Bangalore: The Xperia Play has finally come into the glare of publicity. A super efficient, full featured Smartphone with social networks, 3D maps, Google voice search but, the attention seeking feature is that, this is the 'first PlayStation certified Android Smartphone.' The news of the Xperia Play had been announced at the Mobile World Congress in February 2011. And now, the device is available in Indian markets for 28,990 and it will be available in the U.S. from May 26 at $200 with a two year contract with Verizon. Xperia Play is the first Sony PlayStation gaming centric mobile phone running the latest Google Android OS. The features of the Xperia Play include a large 4-inch LCD touch screen display, powered by the 1GHz Qualcomm CPU with the Adreno 205 GPU and 512 MB of RAM. Powered by Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS, Motion gaming, Gesture gaming, 3D games, Wireless LAN Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity. The device is available in two colours; Black and White. The specifications of the Xperia Play include, Quad band GSM and 3G HSDPA network, 1GHz Scorpion processor, Adreno 205 GPU, Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon, Touch sensitive gaming controls, Accelerometer sensor for UI auto-rotate, Proximity sensor for auto turn-off, Multi-touch input method, Timescape UI, 3.5mm jack, memory capacity upto 400 MB, 380 MB RAM with expandable options, front facing and rear camera (5.1 megapixel with flash), track ID and Java supported. Talking about the prominent feature of the phone, i.e. gaming, the gaming keys are designed like that of a PSP. It also is enabled with a PlayStation pocket app availing the user to play and buy the games for his Xperia Play SmartPhone. Ample number of games in the Android market are exclusively designed for the Xperia Play. There are Seven game titles which come pre-loaded on the device; Madden NFL 11, Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior, Asphalt 6: Adrenaline, The Sims 3, Star Battalion, Crash Bandicoot, and Tetris. The game 'Crash Bandicoot' is fairly recognized as the first PlayStation I game. Sony Ericsson further plans to implement the availability of more titles from PlayStation I and II through PlayStation Suite (library of gaming development tools.) Pricey games like the Crash Bandicoot with its fuzzy "3D" and Star Battalion when played on the device makes the player feel exhilarated with its rich graphics and incredibly smooth gameplay. With Xperia Play climbing up the ladder, it obviously will have its gaming phone competitors following. The Nokia N900 is a punchy, flexible handset with plenty of scope for the tech-savvy retro gaming tinkerer. This device is a complete suite of open source applications for Media playback, support for Adobe Flash 9.4, multiple desktops, Widgets and an Application manager. And it is priced at 25,000. Comparatively, a gaming Phone like the Samsung Wave would also gain acceptance for gaming. Powered by Samsung's fledgling Bada OS, to make it onto this heavyweight-populated list. The classy handset features a breath-taking Super AMOLED touchscreen, which is powered by a powerful 1GHz Hummingbird CPU Power SGX 3D graphics engine. It also has high-end Gameloft game conversions like Dungeon Hunter. And it is priced at 15,000.
