2. Against British Pound Sterling

1 GBP = 105.86

India attained freedom from British rule in 1947, and at that time the exchange rate of rupee was at par with dollar and pound. During independence, rupee was linked to British pound but after the consecutive wars with China in 1962 and then with Pakistan in 1965, India was exposed to budget deficit. The situation got worse and rupee was devaluated to 7.57 against dollar and the link between pound and rupee was broken in 1971. Current exchange rate is 1 Pound= 105.86

3. Rupee against Euro

1 EUR = 91.25

The domestic currency has seen many ups and downs against major currencies during the last few decades. Rupee that actually means silver coin has seen a decline in its value during 19 century when strongest economies ran on gold standard. The depreciation in rupee was a result of discovery of large quantities of silver in U.S. and other European countries. This incident is remembered as “the fall of the rupee”. In the past 15 years, rupee value has fluctuated from 1 euro=44-68 INR.  Current exchange rate is 1 euro=91.25.
