Want to Solve Financial Problems? Learn the ROPES

4. E - Exceptions

When you are finding your own way to solve your financial problem, it can be useful to think about exceptions to the problem. Like the last time when you found something that works better, then you must do more of it. You must look for the exceptions to 'never' or 'always', and if something doesn't work, stop doing it. Habitually, we grip on where we've failed and tend to forget to give ourselves credit for the times we have succeeded. Sometimes realizing those moments helps us to think of solutions we might not have considered before.

Ask the following questions to yourself:

  • When have I avoided this problem? When does this problem not happen?
  • When this problem was less stressful? What was different then in that situation?
  • How have I survived and thrived despite this problem?
