The first President of Singapore, Yusof bin Ishak served from 1965 to 1970. His image appears on the Singapore Portrait Series banknotes introduced in 1999. Prior to becoming the president of Singapore, Yusof was renowned both as a journalist and the founder of ‘Utusan Melayu’, the Malay newspaper.

Personality: Mahatma Gandhi

The Father of Nation, Mahatma Gandhi is the most prominent personality of Indian independence movement. Using non-violent civil disobedience, Gandhi led the country to independence and encouraged movements like non-violence, civil rights and freedom. With the rapid economic, modernization and urbanization development, India has abandoned Gandhi’s economics but follows much of his policies and persists to admire his memory. The country celebrates Gandhi Jayanti, his birthday on 2 October, which is a national holiday.

Gandhi’s portrait appears on banknote of all denominations issued by Reserve Bank of India, expect for the one rupee paper note.
