Bangalore: What's a limb worth? Well, if it's yours or mine, probably nothing. If it belongs to a celebrity it might be worth millions. Because we are busy getting our homes, cars insured and some people even their lives. But this isn't enough for out celebs, they are keen on insuring body parts. This has a surprisingly striking connotation, thanks to hundreds of celebrities who have chosen to insure their various bits and pieces over the past century. A big star can generate buzz for them by declaring that their body parts are worth a fortune.
Started in the 1920s, the concept of insuring body parts with an actor called Ben Turpin who insured his famously crossed eyes, upon which he based his career as an actor in silent movies; the trend seems to be spreading far and wide. Apart from the international celebrities, our desi celebs like Mallika Sherawat, Vijendra Singh, John Abraham and Sania Mirza have insured their body parts and the latest celeb to include her name in the list is the drama queen Rakhi Sawant. The actress wants to insure some of her body parts as they are her biggest asset.
Most body parts be it overseas, are covered under more general insurance policies such as workers compensation and accident, dismemberment and disablement policies. Financially, these policies make much more sense for the average person as they cover many possibilities. Insuring just one body part would be proportionately much more expensive and it would be like insuring your car for hitting a car but not a truck or a wall. It doesn't make sense.
Curious to know what are some famous celeb's worth?
David Beckham the soccer sensation has insured $70 million for legs and feet. Rhianna insured her legs for $1 million. Mariah Carey's insured her legs for a cool $1 billion, Jennifer Lopez has $300 million insured for her buttocks, America Ferrara has 10 Million insured for her teeth.
Entertainment Company generally focuses on standard life and disability insurance instead of specialty policies. The body part policy has become a means of adding extra coverage for especially valuable star. In order to do your body part insurance you don't need to be celebrity. You can also order for specialty insurance if you think you need one. The main drawback behind body part insurance is that you have to pay higher premium.
