Bangalore: Nowadays we see lot of banks crashing down or not surviving more than two to three years. However, there are few banks that have continued operations even during the time of civil wars, world wars and economic depressions without losing its identity. Here are the lists of oldest banks in the world.

1. Monte dei Paschi di Siena

Monte dei Paschi di Siena was founded in 1472 in Siena, Italy. It is the oldest surviving bank and also the longest running bank in the world till date.  This bank was originally formed as The Monte di Pietà, or Monte Pio, which used to give loans to the poor in the form of charity.  Here the word “Monte,” means “heap” or “pile,” which is usually referred to as the collection of money used for charity and during those times the bank also helped in improving city’s economy. In the colonial times people of the city used to take loans by keeping their income from land as a guarantee. Now this bank stands out as the oldest existing bank in the world till date, and it also has many branches across Italy.
