Get an Appraisal
If you think that your item is valuable, take it to an expert who can examine it to evaluate its condition and verify its authenticity. You can also seek out the opinion of vendors at local flea markets and antiques shows who sell similar items. Many auction houses offer free appraisals. Never have someone appraise your collection and then make you an offer on one or more pieces. Legitimate appraisers are independent and will not engage in this type of conflict of interest.
