Technology Ecosystem So Far in 2023 & What to Expect Next ?
An IIT Madras alumnus who has also completed his MS and PhD from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Manish is an exceptionally qualified business professional who possesses over 26 years of experience across diverse tech functions. Prior to joining Silicon Labs in 2021, he held the role of VP for Qualcomm’s engineering division. Some of his areas of expertise include Product & Technology Development, Roadmap Development, Supply Chain Development, Strategic Planning, Technology Transfer, Patent Strategy, and New Market Development. In a recent conversation with Siliconindia, Manish Kothari, Sr. VP - Software Development, Silicon Labs gave us a brief, yet insightful overview of the overall technology landscape so far this year, and discussed its future prospects entering the New Year. Below are the excerpts from the exclusive interview
What are your thoughts on the technology landscape in so far 2023, especially from an Indian standpoint?
The overall technology landscape in 2023 has shown immense growth. Huge innovations such as ChatGPT and taken the world by storm, and Gen AI is making a huge disruptions across many industries. India has seen a lot of momentum around semiconductor manufacturing, which has had a very welcoming impact on assembly of various consumer electronic products; the Apple iPhone being the noteworthy instance. Overall from India's perspective, although the tech landscape has seen its fair share of sunny days, the case has not been the same with the semiconductor sector. The silicon chips industry has been going through a downturn due to the massive inventory build-up that was the resultant of the aftermath of the global covid pandemic. However, this is expected to improve in the coming days.
Tell us about some of the major concerns that tech organizations had while entering 2023. How is the scenario now?
The biggest concerns that tech companies were facing at the initial onset of 2023 was the downturn among both hardware and software companies due to various reasons; the primary one being the covid pandemic. What was even more concerning for us was the duration that this crisis might go on for, which went on a little longer than what most tech leaders had anticipated.
According to you, what were the two most significant tech advancements in 2023?
The first one doubt is Generative AI, which was further intensified by ChatGPT and Open AI. Gen AI has been one of the biggest tech innovations not just of 2023, but of this decade maybe. This technology impacted almost everyone; for instance, AI assisted software development right from code generation to documentation, logging, triaging, and static analysis. The second major development is how matter has started to take more footprint in terms of driving adoption of IoT and addressing the main concerns around security, interoperability and many others. Matter is the application layer standard supported by major corporate such as Apple, Google, Amazon, and Samsung, which are the largest semiconductor code providers today. We are very excited about what will be the trajectories for matter, how it will transform many of the applications and make it easier to adopt & accelerate the growth of IoT in the industry. These two developments, according to me, were the headlines of 2023 in terms of tech advancements.
How do you expect the technology landscape to evolve in 2024?
2024 will definitely be the acceleration of things getting smarter. With AI/ML becoming more mainstream than ever before and impacting almost every aspect of our daily lives, we will see a lot of new use cases emerge around these technologies. In semiconductor segment too, a lot of edge nodes are becoming intelligent. Overall, I strongly believe that 2024 will definitely be the 'Year of AI'.
