siliconindia | | JUNE 20194Innovate or Die: Does it need to be so Dark?In the past 10 years, the workplace has changed a great deal. Consequently, jobs and the requirements of hiring managers for some roles have changed with them. `Hard skills' (technical knowledge, education) are still important, but today `soft skills' that complement hard skills and education are proving just as invaluable. I would like to take this space of page to throw some light on how building soft skills is the most underrated phenomenon in corporate organizations. With the digital age soaring and screaming at the top of its voice, the environment indeed has become one for `Innovate or die'. But that doesn't mean that we need to set aside our values and ethics. Of course, political and regulatory pressures may drive you to adopt certain environment friendly and socially presentable image, but what goes on within the organization matters. It seems to me that one of the problems with this whole discussion is that too much emphasis is put on the goal and not enough on the process. We don't focus enough on how to incorporate these nice-sounding principles into company operations and practices. When the content of the principles is so vague, this makes little sense. If we don't where we need to go, we simply cannot expect to get there. It takes time, but it's a process. Remember, it's not the process that needs managed, it's the people. And people, cannot be managed, but nurtured and educated. Grant Herbert, Founder of People Builders (featured on Cover) agrees with us on this. This company has accomplished great milestones in the workforce management services by addressing the most important part of corporate hierarchy: people. A company like Netflix is often adopted as example of people friendly organization. Their 2009 "manifesto" (in the form of a 120 pages-plus PowerPoint slideshow) has been viewed over 16 million times and was recently updated: `roadmap' is clearly stated on their website: Encourage independent decision-making by all employees; Share information openly, broadly and deliberately; be extraordinarily candid with each other; retain only the most effective people; and avoid rules. This cannot be replicated easily, but every small step counts. This edition, presents those organizations that help enterprises through their services and solutions, from the bottom-up and build a culture that goes a long way for success.I would love to hear you out.
