As the increasing urbanization becomes a growing challenge across India too, there persists a huge challenge in the form of incessant waste generation, managing an enormous amount of municipal solid waste (MSW), industrial waste, hazardous waste, and biological waste. Extensively damaging the environment, the rising landfills and increasing pollution through burning of garbage are a significant reflection of it. There's required an effective management of waste.Well, India framing significant policies such as Solid Waste Management policies in 2000, and initiatives like `Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has long been working towards successful Waste Management along the years now. No doubt, there have been results, but conversion of `waste-to-energy', a conscious effort in this perview is something that will generate immense results.According to a recent study done by the State of India's Environment 2023, MSW generation in India is estimated to be around 150,000 tonne per day (TPD). To harness the energy potential of this heaping waste, rather filling landfills, India is prolifically turning up the game effectuating waste-to-energy (WTE) processes that happens by conversion of garbage into heat and electricity, thereby providing renewable energy (RE). As on November 2022, India had 12 operational and 8 non-operational WTE plants in 10 states. In most of those WTE plants, MSW is burned to generate steam, which powers electric generators. Today, India has the potential to generate 5,690 MW of power from industrial waste and MSW, and according to further analysis on May 2023, the installed capacity stood at 556 MW, indicating the untapped potential of WTE.
